5 life lessons I learnt from my Dad

People who know me closely are aware of Tom & Jerry kind of relationship between me and my father. Off course no relationship is perfect and me and my papa is best example of that. Fighting, blaming, taunting, arguing, debating and stop talking are common events between us. Our relationship has a Kabhi-Khushi-Kabhi-Gam type of history but as I grew up I started accepting him the way he is and I realized that my papa is a jewel. I can learn several things from him. Its just that I’ve to deal with his quirkiness sometimes. List is long but here I want to share 5 most important things I learnt from him.

Accepting simplicity as a lifestyle :-  Being born in TV era, as a kid I was also very influenced by the virtual world very far from reality. I had aspirations like having very good clothes and to be richest person on the planet so that I could buy all the luxuries for myself. But I am a transformed person now. I see my papa, he has very minimal necessities for survival and he never complaints regarding it. He wants to earn money so that he can invest more in his research rather than having unnecessary luxuries. Recently I have also started inculcating the habit of shunning my shopping cravings and use all my stuff to the maximum. I am really in love with this journey of being a minimalist. It helps me to save more and spend in right direction.

Being Fearless :- This attribute I have inherited in maximum amount from my father. I don’t feel afraid of anything and I know that no one can stop me if decide to do something. My father taught me to speak up without fear when anything wrong is happening around. And yeah I have been in trouble several times for taking a stand but I’ll continue being me J. Being fearless taught me to confront truth no matter how hard it is to digest. I hardly lie and I love myself for this.

Caring for Environment :-  I avoid taking plastic bags from shop keepers, I try to control my water consumption, I try my level best to switch off electric appliances when not in use, I throw waste only in dustbins, I am against of celebrating festivals at cost of our environment, I believe in reduce, reuse and recycle. I strongly follow these things because my papa is an Environmentalist.. Can’t be more proud!! <3

Being Health Conscious :- I’ll choose health over wealth because I know how being in pink of health feels like. I believe in natural way of healing and avoiding any kind of disease in body or mind. Offcourse living in polluted cities make things worst. But I still have hopes to see empty hospitals and free doctors. Kind of idealistic!!! Thanks to papa.

Being passionate about one thing :- I have seen him having only one goal since I started to understand things and i.e to develop technology which can be beneficial for human race as well as our Environment. He is One Man Army of his Firm, “Environment and Ecology”. More than 30 years of his life he has dedicated to his research going through all odds. He is far from craving fame.. He just wants to leave the imprints of his work on lives of as many people possible. I really feel inspired by him. I am trying to be as focused as him in the aspect of what I want to do with my life.

The Laughing Buddha of SAS-9: Chanaka Sandaruwan Haggalla

Mornings are very difficult for me. I hate to get late and make people wait for me. But unfortunately I cannot overcome my desire of sleeping till the time after which spending a second in bed, can get me late. Today was one such morning and my mood was already offset. I took a backseat in car and guess what happened next? The first thing I noticed was, 'big-bright' smile of Chanaka and all stress of getting late and facing my guide after a bad performance in project evaluation, flew away. Mimansa Shastri with Camera Man Chanaka Sandurvan Haggalla.. :-P Chanaka is a simple person with very less needs and the cheerful smile on his face depicts the contentment in his heart. His attitude of taking care of others and going beyond his limits to see others happy, impresses me the most. His personality lacks " I " and so far I have not been able to find out any trace of selfishness in him. His simplicity is most charming and his minimalist approach towards life, in...

Cup Periods.. Best Periods

periods for me meant discomfort unless I started using menstrual cups. I had read about menstrual cups while campaigning against taboos related to menstruation but never tried to inquire more about them, considering that this might be a special product used by athletes. On Jagriti Yatra during our visit in Banglore, I visited stall of Boondh and that was the first time I was able to know more about cups and how any girl/woman can switch from plastic sanitary pads to cups. The eco-friendly reasons led me towards thinking about this product but the fear of inserting something in my vagina didn't allow me to buy it on that occasion. Few days later after Yatra, I got a call from a very popular Doctor and social activist of our city, also my mentor for campaigning against menstrual taboos, Dr Ami Yagnik and she was very keen to promote the idea of using menstrual cups among the Surti women. I immediately resonated with her idea and we decided on starting our campaigns to promote menst...
